Months after a similar close call at Central Park, yesterday I had a very close encounter with a raccoon. To be fair, Lola and Celeste were way closer.
Still, as the blog writer, I’m taking the artistic liberty of ignoring that.
In the spirits of a birthday celebration, we went outside and sat at one of the picnic tables so we could light candles.
I watched as Celeste pulled out the cake, which had weathered the travels all the way from New York.
It had been so long since I had been to Trader Joe’s (ten days) and I missed Brooklyn, so I was fully immersed in the experience.
Distracted by the cake in front of me, I hadn’t looked up for a while. When I finally did, sitting across from me right behind Lola and Celeste was a raccoon staring right at me.

I know their innocent appearance gives a false perception of what’s underneath, and the raccoons are feral and ready to attack. Especially when it comes to Trader Joe’s chocolate cake. (Understandably so).
Nevertheless, now I know to always keep out a watchful eye. You can never be vigilant enough, because McGill is in the sticks apparently. (At least one groundhog -maybe- or a look alike animal, and one raccoon).
Stay safe.
