My Favorite Things

Writer's picture: VioletViolet

As a child, often as I was falling asleep, I would scan my room and pick which of my belongings I would save in a fire. The answer was always my stuffed animals.

I would imagine myself throwing them off the side of the building, down to the safety of the trampoline the firefighters had laid out on the street. I’m not sure if they actually use trampolines, but I was certain about this part of the story. Some would bounce off, most would land upright, waiting for me down below as I climbed down the classic fireman ladder. (Why there was both a trampoline and ladder is beyond me).

Today, I was sitting on my rug as I often do. I started to think about what my favorite belongings are all these years later. A list of top ten was too overwhelming, so I decided on an assortment of favorites, in no particular order. I have many more, but as Tati once said, "time and place."

This might also be partially inspired by one of my most cherished songs as a child, "My Favorite Things" from the Sound of Music.

So, here you are.

1. My robot. I actually have four robots, a complete one, a robot head from my Halloween costume, another robot head from an old can, and a 2D cutout, but my favorite is the full-bodied one. He is about two feet tall, which is a very rough estimate; I have always struggled to determine how big a foot actually is. Currently, this robot, which has no name, is sporting my one winter hat and a pink eye mask with polka dots.

It is possibly my favorite thing I have ever made, and I have a strong emotional connection to it. Sometimes I think about how I could the Geppetto to his Pinocchio, although we all saw how that turned out. I actually do not know how that turned out, because I don’t remember the plot. I would imagine not ideally.

I love talking about robots always so I can elaborate on any of this at any time ever.

2. My purple/pink high heel. This comes from the Phoenicia church thrift store, and while I have yet to figure out the perfect thing to put inside, it serves its purpose well as shelf decor. It reminds me of the Wicked Witch from the West (or East), even though I looked her up a few weeks ago and Google told me she dons a red shoe instead. Were they THE red shoes? (By The Red Shoes, I mean those that Dorothy finds/uses). I don't have the answers to these questions.

3. My neon pink and orange calculus textbook. Jaimie spotted this find. At first I thought I had no use for it, but she soon made me realize that the cover is use enough. Math meets style and awesomeness. Now everyone who comes into my room will know how smart and fabulous I am.

4. My two green glass lamps that don’t have bulbs or shades. I’ve added pipe cleaners in the shape of light bulbs to the top, and I always wonder if it’s ever tricked someone. Unlikely, but I hope so.

5. My collection of cats. I am not a particularly cat centric/catty person and I never source them out, so I’m not sure how I’ve gathered this collection, but here they are. Boy, am I grateful! Yes, my desk is dusty. That's life (that's life), thats what all the people say.

6. My silver bowtie necklace. This one is the classiest thing I own. Every time I wear it, I like to imagine the world stops spinning on its axis for a moment.

7. My cheetah pillowcases, green sheets and orange duvet combo. The cheetah pillowcases are the newest addition, and while I don’t think it has a high enough thread count to be something a Real Housewife would own, it makes me feel like one of them. This looks better in person, my camera is not doing it justice.

8. My gold sequin table cloth. This might have been my best yard sale find of the summer. Originally, I had it on my bed, but it shed so many little pieces of wax that I had to cut my losses and put it on my desk.

9. My mouse lamp. It does a weak job light-wise but it’s both on theme with the mice that live alongside us, and has a very cheeky energy which I appreciate. I like that he's holding up the light bulb for me - he also doesn't have a name. Maybe something to work on.

1o. My set of keys that say "Violet's Bitch Mobile" that Alienor, Charlie and Jaimie gave me alongside a Razor scooter for my birthday. I have always aspired to have bitch mobile, and this might be the closest I get considering my crippling fear of getting my license.

That's ten items - tapping out for now.

Honorary mention - my beaver bottle opener.
